Answers about links, QR codes, custom domains, analytics and your account.
Getting started
How do I shorten a link?
Paste the full web address into the box on the home page and press Shorten link. You get a short link right away that you can copy or turn into a QR code. No account is needed.
Do I need an account?
No, but a free account unlocks click analytics in your dashboard, editing, bulk shortening and custom domains. Guests can make up to 10 links per day.
What is the daily limit for accounts?
Free accounts can create up to 200 links per day. The limit resets every day at midnight UTC.
Which links can I not shorten?
Addresses that are not http or https, links to program files such as .exe or .apk, private or internal addresses, sites on our blocked lists or on public phishing and malware lists, and links that are already Freeurl short links.
Links, aliases and QR codes
How do I pick a custom alias?
Open Options or the alias box, then type the ending you want, like freeurl.co/spring-sale. Use 3 to 30 letters, numbers, dashes or underscores. Each alias can only be used once, and codes are case sensitive.
Can I protect a link with a password?
Yes. Turn on Protect with a password when you create the link. Visitors see a password page first. Share the password separately from the link.
How do I make a link expire?
Choose an expiry (1, 7, 30 or 90 days) in the options when you create the link. In your dashboard you can also set an exact date. Expired links show a friendly message instead of redirecting.
Can I change the destination of a short link?
Yes, if you made it while signed in. Open the link in your dashboard and choose Edit. Guest links cannot be edited.
How do I get a QR code?
Press QR code next to any short link. For any other address you can use the free QR code generator.
Why is my link 'held for review'?
Some links look unusual (for example a very new domain ending or a link to another shortener) and are checked by a person first. It usually takes a short time. The link starts working as soon as it is approved.
Custom domains
How do I use my own domain?
In your dashboard open Domains, press Add domain and enter it (for example go.yourbrand.com). We show the DNS records to add at your registrar. When we find them, the domain switches on. There is a full walkthrough on the custom domain page.
Which DNS records do I need?
A subdomain needs a CNAME record pointing to cname.freeurl.net plus a TXT record that proves ownership. A root domain such as yourbrand.com needs an A record (DNS does not allow a CNAME on the root) plus the same TXT record.
My domain says 'waiting for DNS'. What now?
DNS changes can take from a few minutes to a few hours. Check that the host and value are copied exactly, that there is no old record for the same host, then press Check DNS again.
Do custom domains get HTTPS?
Yes. After the domain is verified a free certificate is issued automatically. Until it is ready the dashboard shows the certificate as pending.
How many domains can I connect?
Up to 3 domains per account.
Which safety checks can I turn off on my own domain?
Open your domain in Domains and find Safety checks. You can switch off the AI check, the destination check, the new website rule, the strict address rules and the check at click time, and you can list websites you trust. They are all on by default. If you turn one off, you confirm that you take responsibility for the links on your domain. Checks that protect everyone, such as lists of known phishing and malware sites, cannot be turned off.
Analytics
What do the stats show?
Clicks over time, clicks by hour, top countries, devices, browsers and the sites or apps that sent the visit, plus a list of the latest clicks. Bots and link-preview crawlers are filtered out.
Which time zone are the charts in?
Your own. Pick it in Settings. New accounts get a time zone from the country they sign up from, and you can change it any time. Every date and chart in your dashboard follows that choice.
Can other people see my stats?
No. Links made inside your account keep their stats private: you see them only after you sign in. The public analytics checker shows stats only for links made without an account (guest links).
Why are my numbers lower than another tool shows?
We count one click per visit by a real person and skip bots. Many tools count preview crawlers and refreshes too, which makes their numbers higher.
Account and security
I did not get the verification email.
Check your Inbox and your Spam (or Promotions) folder first. Emails come from [email protected]. You can ask for a new one from the sign-in page.
How do I reset my password?
Use Forgot password on the sign-in page. We email a link that works for one hour.
Can I turn on two-step sign-in?
Yes. Open Settings in your dashboard and turn on two-step sign-in with any authenticator app.
How do I delete my account?
In Settings choose Delete account. Your links stop working and your data is removed.
Safety and reporting
How do I report a harmful link?
Use the report abuse page. No account is needed.
How can I check where a link goes?
Paste it into the unshorten tool. It shows the real destination and a safety check without opening the page.
Why does a link say 'Cannot open this link right now'?
Our check could not finish, or the destination did not answer in time. Nothing is wrong with your device. Try again in a few minutes. If you own the link and the problem stays, open it in your dashboard and check the destination.
Why was my link paused or blocked?
We pause a link when our checks find evidence of phishing, malware, a scam or a direct download of a program file. You get a notification. If you think it is a mistake, open My links, choose the link and send an appeal. A person reviews it.
How do I send a copyright complaint?
See the copyright notices page for what to include. Notices are accepted by email or online form only.
