What is a URL shortener, and why use one?

A URL shortener turns a long web address into a short one that redirects to the original page. Long links with tracking tags, session IDs and folder paths are hard to read, easy to break in an email and impossible to put on a business card. A short link fixes all three. It is easier to type, fits in a text message or a social bio, and makes a cleaner QR code that scans faster.

Short links are also the simplest way to learn what works. Every click on a Freeurl link is counted, so you can see which post, flyer or newsletter sent the visit, which countries they came from and whether they were on a phone or a laptop.

Who uses Freeurl

  • Small businesses put one clean link on menus, flyers and receipts, and see which ones get scanned.
  • Marketers and creators give each channel its own link, so Instagram, email and TikTok can be compared side by side.
  • Teachers and teams share long document or form links in class chats and slide decks without breaking them.
  • Developers use short links with UTM tags for campaigns and keep them tidy with custom aliases.

How Freeurl keeps links safe

Every link is checked before it goes live. We block phishing and malware sites, links to program files and private network addresses, and we hold unusual links for a quick review. If you come across something harmful, the report page reaches our team directly, and anyone can look at a short link's real destination first with the unshorten tool.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about how Freeurl works.

Is Freeurl really free?

Yes. Shortening links, QR codes, password protection, link expiry and click analytics are all free. There are no paid plans and no credit card is needed.

Do I need an account to shorten a link?

No. You can shorten links as a guest from the box at the top of this page. A free account adds click analytics in your dashboard, link editing, bulk shortening and custom domains.

Do short links expire?

Not unless you want them to. Links never expire by default. Use Options to set an expiry of 1, 7, 30 or 90 days, and the link switches itself off on that date.

Can I change where a short link goes?

With a free account, yes. Guest links cannot be edited, so sign up if you may need to change the destination later.

Can I pick my own custom alias?

Yes. Type a custom ending such as freeurl.co/spring-sale into the alias box. Aliases can use 3 to 30 letters, numbers, dashes and underscores, and each one can only be used once per domain.

Can I use my own domain for short links?

Yes. Free accounts can connect their own domain or subdomain, such as go.yourbrand.com, by adding a couple of DNS records. We show you the exact values and check them for you.

What kinds of links are blocked?

We block phishing and malware sites, links to program files, private or internal addresses, and sites on our blocked lists. Suspicious links may be held for a quick review before they start working.

How does password protection work?

Visitors see a password page first. They reach the destination only after entering the right password. Share the password separately from the link.

Can I see how many people clicked my link?

Yes. Sign in to your free account and every link has a stats page with clicks by day, hour, country, device, browser and referrer. The free link analytics checker shows stats for links made without an account.

How do I report a harmful or abusive link?

Use the Report abuse page. We review reports and disable links that break our rules.
